The Great State Khural (parliament) of Mongolia, after a secret vote, adopted a decision on the resignation of the country's prime minister Luvsannamsreyn Oyun-Erdene, who will continue to fulfill his duties until the appointment of a new prime minister, the parliament's press service reported.

"According to the law on the rules of the session of the Mongolian parliament, the majority of the deputies, 64 people, had to vote for a vote of confidence in the prime minister. "Since the vote of confidence was not approved by the majority of parliamentarians by secret ballot, a decision was made to resign the head of government," the parliamentary press center reported.

The Speaker of the Parliament, Dashzegvin Amarbayasgalan, has instructed the resigned prime minister to fulfill his duties until the appointment of a new head of the Cabinet of Ministers. According to the law, a new head of the Mongolian government must be appointed within 30 days.

In recent days, peaceful protests have taken place in the central square of Ulaanbaatar. One of them demanded the prime minister's resignation and an explanation for the large expenses of his 22-year-old son on gifts for his fiancée, who posted photos of a diamond ring, a car and a designer handbag worth several thousand dollars on social media.

This sparked criticism from the public, which began to demand evidence of the prime minister's son's high income.

Another problem is related to the law on the National Welfare Fund, adopted by the Mongolian parliament in 2024, which should ensure equal income from the country's natural resources for all citizens. Protesters are defending the prime minister and demanding an increase in the National Welfare Fund by nationalizing the largest strategic deposits.
