Keir Starmer: Gaza faces dark days - 1

Gaza faces "dark days", British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said, promising to consider "further action" against Israel, PA Media/DPA reported, quoted by BTA.

In Parliament, Starmer described the Israeli government's behavior in the Palestinian enclave as "counterproductive and unacceptable".

He made his comments after the US-Israeli-backed "Gaza Humanitarian Foundation" (HFG) today suspended food deliveries to its three distribution points in Gaza after health authorities said at least 27 Palestinians had been killed in a series of shootings near the points this week.

The leader of the Northern Ireland Social Democratic and Labour Party, Claire Hanna, said that "Ms Rachel shows more moral clarity on YouTube than many world leaders who are complicit in silence", referring to the famous educationalist who called on leaders to "be ashamed" of what she described as "anti-Palestinian racism".

Hannah told the House of Commons: "The Prime Minister said this week that Britain must be prepared for war, and I ask: after tens of thousands of deaths, after a generation of Gazans whose development has been marked by hunger and trauma, when will she be ready for peace? When will she help stop this genocide? When will she hold the Israeli government to account and when will she recognise the state of Palestine?“

Starmer replied: "She is absolutely right to describe these as dark days. Israel's recent actions are appalling and, in my view, counterproductive and intolerable, and we stand firmly against the expansion of military operations and settler violence, as well as the blocking of humanitarian aid."

The prime minister added: "You have seen that we have suspended negotiations on a free trade agreement and imposed sanctions on extremists supporting violence in the West Bank. We will continue to consider further action with our allies, including sanctions, but let me be absolutely clear: we must return to a ceasefire.

The hostages who have been held for a very long time must be released, and we desperately need more aid, quickly and in large quantities, in Gaza, because the situation is appalling and unacceptable.”

Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey asked Starmer if he would "press the UN Security Council for humanitarian corridors to get urgently needed aid into Gaza".

He told the House of Commons: "The US-Israeli agenda is clearly failing and nothing short of a complete lifting of the aid blockade will help, but given the fact that [Benjamin] Netanyahu's government refuses to do that, will the Prime Minister take more decisive action today?“
