The Washington Center for Strategic and International Studies concludes that Moscow lost about one million soldiers (killed and wounded) in the war, and Kiev - about 400,000.
About one million Russian soldiers have died or been wounded in Russia's war against Ukraine, which began on February 24, 2022. The conclusion is from the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington. According to its data, Ukraine's losses for the same period amounted to 400,000 people. Thus, the total number of victims on both sides - killed and wounded - reaches 1.4 million.
At the same time, it is noted that the data may not be accurate, since Moscow, as a rule, underestimates its losses, and Kiev does not publish official information. The numbers on which the Washington center relies are mainly from estimates of the US and British governments, notes "The New York Times", which published them.
The number of Russian military personnel killed during the war in Ukraine since 2022 is estimated at 250,000 people. "None of the wars involving the Soviet Union or Russia since World War II is at all comparable to the war in Ukraine in terms of mortality", the authors point out. During World War II, 8.7 million Russian soldiers lost their lives.
Experts in Washington estimate the number of Ukrainian soldiers killed in the war at between 60,000 and 100,000.
The probability of Russia winning the war
The study notes that as of January 2024, Russia had managed to occupy less than one percent of Ukraine's territory, although Russian troops continue to advance inland. In general, about 20 percent of Ukraine's territory is currently under Russian control.
One of the study's authors notes that in order for Russia to win the war, the United States must reduce its support for Ukraine. "In the long term, the Russians can maintain the balance of power if US President Donald Trump turns around and leaves. If the US doesn't leave, Russian President Putin will have serious problems."
