According to a report presented to the UN Human Rights Council, at least 975 people were executed in Iran in 2024, DPA reported, BTA reported.
Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights Nada al-Nashif said this was the highest number of executions in the country since 2015.
Just over half of the death sentences were issued for drug-related crimes, 43% were for murder, 3% for security-related charges, and 2% for sexual crimes. At least four executions were carried out in public, the report said.
Last week, a man was executed in Iran in connection with mass protests that began in September 2022 over the death of young Kurdish Iranian woman Mahsa Amini. She died in custody after being detained by the morality police for improperly wearing a hijab.
The data from the report presented yesterday coincide with those from the annual report of the Oslo-based human rights organization "Iranian Human Rights" (IHRNGO) and the France-based NGO "Together Against the Death Penalty" (ECPM).
