An assassination attempt on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was foiled at the airport in Rzeszow, according to Vasyl Malyuk, head of the Security Service of Ukraine, Euractiv reports, quoted by Focus.
The assassination attempt was supposed to take place in April 2024.
Polish Interior Ministry spokesman Jacek Dobrzynski said that on April 17, 2024, officers of the Internal Security Agency detained a Polish citizen, Pavel K., in the Lublin Voivodeship, eastern Poland.
The man is suspected of having expressed willingness to cooperate with the Russian intelligence service GRU. He was detained "in connection with an investigation into the expression of readiness to act on behalf of a foreign intelligence service against the Republic of Poland", Dobrzynski said in a statement. "Along with the suspect's detention, officers searched his residence, where they found evidence, as well as illegally possessed ammunition."
According to Dobrzynski, the investigation found that Pavel K. had declared his readiness to act on behalf of the GRU.
"His tasks included, among other things, collecting information about the Rzeszów-Jasionka airport. This was intended, among other things, to assist Russian intelligence services in planning a possible assassination attempt on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky," the spokesman added.
