Six people have died in floods in China's Guizhou province, state media reported, after more than 80,000 people were forced from their homes this week.

Towns and villages along the Liu River in China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region were half submerged as floodwaters from the upstream province surged into the mountainous region. The expected arrival of a tropical cyclone further increases the risk of disasters.

Today, state broadcaster CCTV reported “extremely severe flooding.”

Meanwhile, this week authorities issued the second-highest heat warning for the capital Beijing on one of the hottest days of the year so far.

Tens of thousands of people were evacuated last week in Hunan province – which borders Guizhou – due to torrential rains.
