Delegates to the national conference of the German Social Democratic Party (SPD) will submit for discussion on the final third day of the forum today a proposal to ban the far-right party "Alternative for Germany" (AfG), reported DPA, quoted by BTA.

On Friday, the Social Democrats elected Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil, who has held the position until now, and Labor Minister Berbel Bass, who replaced Saskia Esken, as their co-chairs for the next two years.

The proposal will be submitted to the country's constitutional authorities to initiate a procedure to declare the AfG illegal.

The German counterintelligence agency - the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution in Germany - decided last month to categorize "Alternative for Germany" as a "proven extremist organization", but subsequently froze the categorization procedure.

"Now is the time for the constitutional authorities to create the conditions for moving forward with a procedure to place the AfD outside the constitution", says the text of the prepared proposal by the SPD.

Newly elected co-chairwoman Bass signaled on Friday that she supports the proposal. "Now we really need to clarify quickly whether there are sufficient grounds for the Constitutional Court to ban the AfD", said the former president of the Bundestag (lower house of the German parliament).
