Israel has agreed to the necessary conditions to finalize a 60-day ceasefire in Gaza. This was announced by US President Donald Trump, reports the BBC.
In a post on the social network Truth Social, he said that during the proposed ceasefire, the US would work with all parties to end the war. Trump did not clarify what the ceasefire would include. According to him, Qatar and Egypt, who have worked hard to achieve peace, will present the final proposal. The American head of state expressed optimism that Hamas would accept the proposal, because otherwise things would get worse.
Israel has not officially confirmed that it has agreed to the terms of the deal. Hamas has said it is ready to accept the deal if it ends the war in Gaza. The group says it is seeking an agreement that guarantees an end to aggression, the withdrawal of Israeli forces and the provision of emergency aid to our people in the Gaza Strip.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar wrote on the social network X that there is support in the government for a framework for the release of hostages and that this opportunity should not be missed. For Israel, a key component of any deal is the release of most, if not all, of the hostages still being held in Gaza.
Of the approximately 50 hostages still held, more than 20 are believed to be alive, and their plight is at the forefront of regular demonstrations in Israel calling for an end to the war. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been pushing for a "total victory" for months. over Hamas before ending the war. It is unclear whether his position will now change under pressure from Washington.
Earlier, Israel's UN ambassador, Danny Danon, said that Israel was fully prepared for a ceasefire. However, he noted that Hamas was playing hardball. According to him, if the Palestinian group did not sit down at the negotiating table again, Israel would have to apply even greater pressure. The war will end when the hostages return home, Danon explained.
Israel launched a military campaign in Gaza after Hamas's attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, in which about 1,200 people were killed. At least 56,647 people have died in the Israeli offensive in Gaza.
