Turkey is waiting to find out how much the salaries of public sector employees will increase after they are indexed based on inflation data for the first half of the year, which are expected to be announced today by the Turkish Statistical Institute.
The level of inflation for the six months since the beginning of the year will determine the minimum amount of remuneration for doctors, police officers, teachers, administrative staff.
Due to high inflation rates in the country in recent years, Turkey indexes the salaries of civil servants twice a year - in January and July. Turkish media have already published estimated salary increases for the second half of the year based on calculations of the expected level of inflation.
Accounts presented in the Turkish newspaper "Sabah", show that from July the minimum salary of a specialist doctor in Turkey will be 124,446 Turkish liras or 5,204 leva (compared to 109,154 Turkish liras - 4,564 leva - so far), and of a nurse - 60,955 liras or 2,549 leva (compared to 53,465 liras - 2,235 leva). An ordinary police officer will receive 67,195 Turkish liras (2,809 leva) - an increase of 58,958 liras (2,464 leva), the lowest paid teacher - 60,351 Turkish liras (2,523 leva) instead of the previous 52,935 liras (2,213 leva), a clerk - 51,937 liras (2,171 leva) instead of the previous 45,555 liras (1,904 leva).
The calculations were made for an employee with two children whose spouse does not work, explains "Sabah".
Turkey reported inflation of 35.41 percent on an annual basis in May, which is a slight decrease compared to April, when annual inflation of 37.86 percent was reported.
