Escalation of clashes between Thailand and Cambodia could lead to war, Thai acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wichaichai warned today, quoted by Reuters, reports BTA.
He stressed that heavy weapons are currently being used in the fighting.
A new clash between Thai and Cambodian troops broke out this morning along the shared border - an area of long-standing tension that has now escalated into one of the worst military confrontations in recent years. According to DPA, more than 100,000 people have been forced to flee their homes.
The Thai army warned in a message on "Facebook" that fighting was continuing in several border areas. Residents of the northeastern provinces were urged to move away from the conflict zone.
The clashes followed fierce fighting yesterday, in which the Thai military said it had carried out air strikes on Cambodian positions in response to cross-border shooting. Cambodia responded with artillery fire, including on civilian areas.
According to the latest figures from the Thai government, the death toll in the country has risen to at least 14 people - 13 civilians and one soldier. More than 100,000 people from four provinces have already been evacuated to approximately 300 temporary centers.
