The leaders of Thailand and Cambodia have agreed on an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, which will put an end to the border clashes that have escalated in recent days. This was announced by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, quoted by world agencies, BTA reports.
Ibrahim, whose country hosted the meeting between representatives of the two countries, said that the ceasefire takes effect from midnight (local time). According to him, this is the first step towards de-escalating tensions and restoring peace in the region. Thailand and Cambodia have also agreed to restore bilateral communications.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen expressed satisfaction with the results of the meeting and hope that the fighting will stop immediately. He expressed special thanks to former US President Donald Trump for his mediation, as well as to the government of China for its participation in the peace process.
Phumtham Vejjaichai, acting Prime Minister of Thailand, reaffirmed his country's commitment to the agreement reached and stated that the ceasefire would be implemented in good faith by both sides.
