The Kremlin is trying to force US President Donald Trump to abandon his announced 10-day deadline for ending the war in Ukraine. This is stated in the latest report of the Institute for the Study of War (ISW). The institute's analysts recall that the Russian authorities rejected Trump's new ultimatum for negotiations to end the war against Ukraine.
The analysts give the example of the Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev, who stated in his English-language account on X that Trump cannot dictate the terms for the start of peace talks and that the war will end when the Russian Federation achieves all its military goals.
ISW also recalls the words of Kremlin press secretary Dmitry Peskov that the Russians will continue the war against Ukraine in order to protect their own interests, even despite the new deadline announced by Trump.
Peskov even hinted that there has been a slowdown in the process of normalizing Russian-American relations recently. And he hastened to shift the responsibility to the Americans, stating that the Kremlin remains interested in this normalization, but progress will require "impulses" on both sides.
"Peskov's statements about the deterioration of relations between Russia and the United States are part of efforts aimed at forcing Trump to give up his term in the name of normalizing bilateral relations and continuing cooperation“, analysts suggest.
