The US missile defense system "Golden Dome", which was announced earlier by US President Donald Trump, is likely to consist of four layers - one satellite and three ground-based, Reuters reported.
According to the agency, a sensor and guidance system will be located in space, which will be responsible for early warning of launches and tracking of enemy missiles, as well as for "missile defense". Three more ground layers will consist of interceptor missiles, a radar network and "probably lasers".
According to a government presentation available to the media, the project also envisages the deployment of "11 batteries with a small range“ in the continental United States, as well as in the states of Alaska and Hawaii. In addition, it is planned to create a new missile range in the Midwest (a region of 12 states in the central and northeastern United States) for next-generation interceptor missiles developed by the American military concern Lockheed Martin.
According to slides shown in a presentation to representatives of the American military-industrial complex in Huntsville, Alabama, the deployment of the system should be completed by 2028. At the same time, as became clear from the images, there is still uncertainty about the main characteristics of the system, including the total number of launchers, interceptors, ground stations and missile bases.
On May 20, Trump announced that the United States had decided on the structure of its missile defense system “Golden Dome“. The administration proposes to allocate about $ 175 billion for it. According to Trump, the creation of the new system will take a little under three years.
