The US Treasury Department has temporarily lifted some sanctions on Russia, clearing the way for a planned meeting between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.
The Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) said the waiver covers transactions that are "normally incidental to and necessary for the attendance at or support of meetings in the state of Alaska between the government of the United States of America and the government of the Russian Federation".
The pause will remain in effect until August 20, OFAC added.
In recent years, Washington has imposed a wide range of sanctions on Russian officials and companies, mainly over Moscow's aggressive war against Ukraine. These measures could prevent travel to Alaska for negotiators.
