The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced today that radiation levels in the Kursk nuclear power plant area are within normal limits, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.
The press service of the plant, located 60 kilometers from the border with Ukraine, announced overnight that a Ukrainian drone attack had caused a fire. The fire was quickly extinguished, but caused damage to a transformer, the plant said.
Kursk Region Governor Alexander Khinshtein accused Ukraine of creating a "threat to nuclear safety".
"Monitoring confirms normal radiation levels near the Kursk nuclear power plant," the IAEA said in a publication in "Ex". The UN nuclear regulator said it could not independently confirm that there had been an incident at the Russian nuclear power plant.
So far, the Ukrainian side has not commented on the incident.
The alleged attack took place on Ukraine's national holiday, Independence Day.
