The UN has deployed at least 25 teams to assess situation and respond to aftermath of earthquake in Afghanistan, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said.

The office warns that stocks of housing construction materials and medical supplies are running low, and current funding is insufficient to meet all needs. It also stressed that the natural disaster brought death and destruction “to a country already facing multiple crises, including a severe drought and the return of millions of Afghans from neighboring countries“.

On August 31, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 was registered in the Hindu Kush mountains, 27 km southwest of the city of Asadabad in eastern Afghanistan. As reported by Khaama Press, powerful tremors destroyed entire villages. Landslides blocked access roads to some settlements and cut communication lines.

Rescue operations are underway in difficult conditions in difficult mountainous terrain. According to the latest data from the Afghan authorities, the death toll from the earthquake has reached 1,411, with another 3,124 people injured. On September 2, another 5.5 magnitude earthquake struck the Hindu Kush mountains.
