A joint briefing was held today by the "Traffic Police" and the National Toll Administration. Toll cameras have recently been used to detect violators on the roads. The adaptation of the information systems between the "Road Infrastructure" agency and the Ministry of Interior has been completed.
"Since November 26, data has begun to be collected for the implementation of administrative-criminal liability for violations related to the average speed. There is still a lot of work to be done in terms of processing, the implementation of the administrative-criminal liability itself", said the deputy director of the "National Police" Senior Commissioner Ivan Madzharov.
According to him, both systems are absolutely synchronized and data is already being collected for the processing of the violations themselves and the implementation of administrative and criminal liability.
The speed cameras have been detecting average speed since September 7. According to the data from the system, an improvement in the behavior of drivers is noticeable.
"Here, before I stopped at Ihtiman, I was driving between 85 and 90. And there is still 120 in the left lane. The Bulgarian is so learned that when you reach into his pocket, he already says: "Ah, that's not how it should be"", shares Krasimi, a driver.
"Before these cameras appeared, they were driving at 200-220. Everyone pretends to be a bigger jerk than they are, and many get caught", says Alexander, another driver who stopped for a short break.
“The National Toll Administration has received about 50,000 files for such violations. These files will be reviewed very carefully to avoid mistakes. They are still monitoring the process in parallel with the imposition of penalties”, announced the chief inspector of the “Traffic Police” department Lachezar Bliznakov.
He added that there is a tolerance in favor of the driver, which is legally established, depending on the speed of movement.
The National Toll Administration stated that by the end of 2026 the goal is for the number of sections for detecting average speed to be 100.
„So far we have certified 65 sections that detect average speed. The trend is that they will be increased to 100 by the end of 2026. From September 7 to the present we have detected 49,291,000 violators, with a trend of decreasing. The ranking is led by a driver with 248 km/h. He was detected in the Radinovo - Tsalapitsa region”, said the head of the „Control and Law Enforcement” department in the Bulgarian Toll Management Bozhidar Chakarov.
