Ivaylo Mirchev: The police were deliberately withdrawn. The goal – to discredit the largest protest in 35 years

The MP described the government as a “complete failure”

The MP from “We Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria“ Ivaylo Mirchev made sharp accusations against the Ministry of Interior and the ruling coalition after the tense events during yesterday's mass protest in Sofia. On the air of “Hello, Bulgaria” he stated that the police were “deliberately withdrawn”, which allowed provocateurs to provoke clashes and lead to tension in front of the headquarters of “DPS - Novo nacholo” on 23 “Vrabcha“ Str.

Mirchev explained that even during the march he noticed a lack of a police cordon on the route from the Bulgarian National Bank to the headquarters of the DPS. “When I saw that there was not a single policeman on the entire boulevard, I called the Minister of the Interior. No reaction. I also called Boyko Borisov – he didn't even know what I was talking about“, said the MP.

According to him, there are usually many times more police officers present in front of the entrance to the MRF-NN headquarters even during small protests, and on Monday not a single uniformed officer was deployed.

Mirchev claims that the decision not to secure the perimeter was made intentionally: “The police were withdrawn absolutely intentionally. The provocateurs were absolutely intentionally not prevented. The goal was to discredit the largest protest in the last 35 years.“

He pointed out that representatives of “We Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria“ have reported suspicious groups from the area of the National Stadium - groups of 10-15 people, wearing hoods and black masks.

Mirchev reported that he had also visited the substation where a breakdown occurred yesterday, temporarily cutting off the power supply around the center. “There are serious indications that this is sabotage. This substation has never had a problem. If it is guarded the way the protest was guarded - it is no guard at all,“ he said.

According to Mirchev, the first two immediate steps are: the resignation of the Minister of the Interior, who according to him was “organized by “DPS - New Beginning” and “missing from the public eye“, as well as the withdrawal of the 2026 Budget submitted by the government.

The MP described the government as “a complete failure“ and announced that the PP-DB will not participate in any new majority within this parliament.

When asked whether the formation is pushing for early elections, Mirchev said that an official position will be announced later today, but stressed that “these people have no legitimacy to govern“.

Commenting on concerns that the political crisis could delay the country's entry into the eurozone, Mirchev stated categorically: “Bulgaria is already in the eurozone. The euro banknotes are here. There is no option in which Bulgaria does not enter. In 29 days we will operate with the euro.“
