Syndicate "Education" to CT "Support" propose that the teacher's salary become 150% above the average gross salary for the country. A national union study shows that, while increasing, teachers' pay is not keeping up with their many responsibilities and duties. It was conducted among 4150 teachers.
Dr. Yulian Petrov - Chairman of the Trade Union "Education" specifies that the union aims to study the effectiveness of the educational policy for attracting and retaining teachers and for the rating of the teaching profession in the educational institutions of Bulgaria.
90.7 percent of those surveyed responded that salaries, although increasing, are not relevant to the many responsibilities and duties of teachers. The teaching profession is the most demanding, teachers are often subject to burnout, therefore, according to analysts, the "high" salaries are not attractive.
Only 6.3 percent think that rewards are motivating.
"Education analysts insist that the established trend toward higher teacher salaries is already attracting a steady stream of young teachers into the education system. Contrary to these statements, 81% of the participants in the study answered that the rewards definitely do not compensate for the increasing duties and responsibilities, and the huge burnout. This, in turn, is repulsive for young teachers. The average age of teachers in Bulgaria has not changed significantly in the last five years," adds Dr. Petrov.
The trade union "Education" is categorical that for a good rating and attraction of young teachers, it is necessary that the teacher's salary be 150% above the average gross salary for the country, regulated in the Preschool and School Education Act, and that beginning teachers be provided with the opportunity for horizontal and vertical growth .
