Two people were admitted in a serious condition to the infectious disease clinic in Plovdiv after have been bitten by a tick. These are the first cases this year since the weather warmed.
As temperatures rise, so does the number of people bitten by ticks. The main risk is contracting Lyme disease. For the first four months, there were 25 registered patients across the country. During the same period a year earlier, they were only 12. Municipalities in our country are already fighting pests through preparations that are used to treat lawns.
Donka Koleva is lying in the infectious disease clinic of the "St. George" University Hospital. in Plovdiv with Marseille fever. She was admitted a few days after the bite with high fever, muscle pain and a rash.
„At home mowing the grass, I couldn't notice. The tick stuck under my arm," Donka told Nova TV.
Besides Donka, there is another man in the clinic who was diagnosed with Lyme disease. He is a resident of Haskovo and was transported by ambulance to Plovdiv.
“The bitten are in fair to good condition, especially the Marseille fever patient. The stay is about 7 days. "Treatment has begun," said Prof. Uliana Boykinova, head of the Clinic for Infectious Diseases at UMBAL "St. Georgi“.
Lyme disease progresses in several phases causing damage to the skin, joints, heart and nervous system. A skin rash is characteristic. Doctors warn tourists to be careful when going out in the mountains.
