Parliamentarians from the 32 NATO member states gather in Sofia

Nearly 400 parliamentarians from the 32 NATO member states and from 25 partner countries and parliamentary organizations will participate in the spring session of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly from May 25 to 27, 2024 in Sofia, dariknews reported. bg The host of the forum is the National Assembly of the Republic of Bulgaria.

Participants in the spring session of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly will discuss key topics on the Euro-Atlantic defense and security agenda with a focus on support for Ukraine and the priorities of the upcoming NATO summit in Washington in July. On May 25 and 26, 2024, parliamentarians will participate in the work of the five committees of the Parliamentary Assembly, discuss their draft reports and adopt key policy recommendations.

At the opening of the plenary session on May 27, 2024, the participants of the spring session of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly are expected to be welcomed by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, the President of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly Michal Shcherba, the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Rositsa Kirova and Acting Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev.

In Sofia, the Assembly must adopt its recommendations for the NATO summit in Washington, which the Chairman of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, Michal Shcherba, will present there to the heads of state and government.

Swedish parliamentarians will participate in the work of the spring session of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly in Sofia for the first time after the country became a full member of the Alliance. The speaker of the Swedish Parliament, Andreas Norlen, is scheduled to speak at the forum.

During the session, the Assembly is expected to reinforce its firm position on Russia's unjustified, unprovoked and brutal war against Ukraine, discuss the provision of immediate and long-term aid to Ukraine, and adopt a declaration of support for Ukraine until victory. At the opening of the plenary session, the Minister of Defense of Ukraine, Rustem Umerov, is expected to deliver a message to parliamentarians via video conference.

Discussions will focus on translating NATO's commitment to core democratic values into action through the establishment of a Center for Democratic Resilience at NATO Headquarters. The Assembly will also consider the practical implementation of NATO's new defense plans, NATO's evolving air and missile defense posture, and the fulfillment of member states' defense spending and burden sharing obligations.

At their meeting in Sofia, parliamentarians from NATO member states will discuss and adopt decisions on the requests of Malta and the Assembly of Kosovo to become delegations of associate members. Among the topics of the forum will be the challenges in the countries of the Western Balkans, along with strategies to support partners at risk and strengthen engagement with the Global South. These discussions will underscore the Assembly's commitment to stability in key regions of strategic interest, as well as to promoting a broader dialogue on global challenges.
