Konstanza Rangelova: Unit 7 of the Kozloduy NPP will cost 20 billion dollars and 10 years

Putting nuclear energy in the center is quite a risk, the energy expert said

Construction of Unit 7 of the NPP "Kozloduy" is a very serious undertaking, because it is a project that will certainly take at least a decade to be completed and even more to be paid off 20 billion dollars, when it is actually more realistic to be worth much more than that in the end.

This is what Kostanza Rangelova, an energy expert, commented to FOCUS.

According to her, to a large extent, putting nuclear energy at the center of our energy strategy is quite a big risk: "Because it will take an enormous amount of effort, time and resources to develop and achieve".

In the words of Rangelova, nuclear energy provides the opportunity for a very large amount of electricity to be produced: "But by the time such a project is realized, it is really a decade or more, in some cases more than 15 years of construction work, which means that in those 15 years we are doing nothing much else in the way of increasing our energy security and improving our energy system. So this is largely a factor as a distraction I would say, against possible other priorities that would have much faster results and with much less risk to the actual implementation of the project. Because as we know from the "Belene" NPP, we are talking about projects that risk being delayed for years, being interrupted, and during that time important resources are not diverted to other more important investments, says energy expert Costanza Rangelova.
