The Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works proposes to introduce a one-day vignette, which can be used mostly by those passing through the country in transit, who currently pay for a weekly vignette, dariknews.bg reported.

A public discussion is to be held and after that the price of the one-day vignette will be discussed.

There are five types of vignettes in Bulgaria at the moment - a weekend vignette at a price of 9 BGN, a weekly vignette at a price of 13 BGN, a monthly (27 BGN), a quarterly vignette (48 BGN) and an annual vignette which costs 87 BGN.

A month ago, the European Commission demanded that Bulgaria and 15 other EU countries fully implement the European rules, which stipulate that the tolls for cargo trucks should be adjusted to the amount of carbon dioxide emitted during their movement.

Since 1999, rules have provided that payment for use of the EU road network is either time (with vignettes) or mileage (tolls). In this way, the costs of construction and maintenance of roads are covered.

In 2022, the rules were extended to include passenger cars and small heavy-duty vehicles. A requirement was introduced that EU countries impose payments according to the carbon dioxide emissions emitted by the movement of heavy goods vehicles.

This measure encourages the use of newer models of trucks that pollute less.

By the end of March this year, EU countries had to inform the commission how they had implemented the changes in national legislation. So far, this obligation has not been fulfilled by Bulgaria, Belgium, Ireland, Greece, Spain, Croatia, Italy, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia and Slovakia.

The Commission gave a two-month deadline for an answer and noted that it would then proceed with the opening of criminal proceedings.
