NATO is a defensive alliance. It is written in the North Atlantic Treaty that NATO stands for peace and security in the North Atlantic area. At the moment there is a war in this area, this means that NATO must increase its deterrence and defense capabilities. The figure of 300 will become 500 thousand military personnel who are in combat readiness.NATO member countries have superiority in combat equipment and military personnel compared to Russia Federation. This was commented by the Ambassador of Bulgaria to the USA in “Offensive with Lyubo Ognyanov”.
He explained that according to the World Bank report, Bulgaria was included in the group of rich countries for the first time. “Bulgaria is prospering and the Bulgarian people are getting richer. This is due to the fact that our country is part of the free world of democracies. The free world is where the average citizen is free to make his own decisions – to express his opinion freely, to have freedom of speech, the press, and travel," added H.E. Panayotov.
“Bulgaria spends about 2% of its GDP on defense. But what percentage should we give if there is an enemy army on our borders that wants to invade our territory. Ukraine has the right to self-defense. And the countries of NATO and the EU must help her. This is done with political solidarity and concrete support. The funds we invest in our defense and the funds we provide in the form of armaments or humanitarian aid in Ukraine are in fact an investment in our own security," the diplomat said.
In his words, neither NATO nor Bulgaria as a member plans to send military personnel to the front in Ukraine. “The alliance will provide assistance by training Ukrainian soldiers and the center will be located in Germany”, Panayotov also explained.
