A new way of monitoring the border between Romania and Bulgaria is effective from today - by air, by helicopter, reports Ajepres. The beginning was made by the Territorial Inspectorate of the Border Police in Gyurghevo, BTA correspondent Martina Gancheva reports.

The initiative is supported by the General Aviation Inspectorate of the Ministry of the Interior of Romania. The event was held in the presence of the Bulgarian partners from the border police and with the participation of commissioner Dimitar Chorbadjiev - director of the Regional Directorate “Border Police” in Ruse.

“We deal with the supervision and control of the entire border formed by the Danube River,” said the head of the inspectorate, Chief Commissioner Viorel Kieran. He specified that the area of the inspectorate extends for a length of approximately 450 kilometers, from the border of Dolj County with Mehedinc, to the municipality of Kallarash.

“We control this area together with our Bulgarian partners. The Romanian and Bulgarian border police work together. There are a lot of joint activities that we do - patrolling along the Danube, patrolling on land, and today you saw the air patrol and joint missions with the General Aviation Inspectorate in Romania,” Kiran said.

He announced that soon the inspectorate in Gyurghevo will have the first drone.

“We, as members of the Schengen area, are also obliged to take compensatory measures, and that is why we jointly conduct mixed patrols in the border area and now we also apply this new method of helicopter surveillance,” said Commissioner Dimitar Chorbadjiev in turn.

He stated that now with the help of the helicopter and aerial observations in the context that the water levels of the Danube have decreased, "new places where there may be a risk of illegal crossing" can be observed very well, and can be appropriate measures taken.
