Flooded houses in Silistrensko because of a collapsed street

The mayor of Aydemir also admits to a problem, but he does not agree with the claims that nothing has been done

Unfinished repair of a street in the Silistren village of Aydemir is a reason for everyone heavier rain to flood the properties of those living there. People are worried that some of the buildings are already cracked and could collapse, and the municipal government in Silistra says they have been promised funding for repairs from the Commission on Disasters and Accidents.

Rumyana Ivanova's property on “Chernozem” is among the most affected by the incoming water through the old drainage channel. During the last heavy rain, the water once again invaded the yard and part of the buildings. The woman says she worries every time it rains and adds that she has heard about the promised repairs.

„You see what the situation is, we can't even go out, we can't go anywhere, even if we go it's with fear. We had a problem with that creek, but it became a battlefield. The money was gone and that was it! "No one is doing anything," Ivanova claims.

The Mayor of Aydemir also acknowledges the problem, but does not agree with the claims that nothing has been done. The municipality of Silistra applied to the Commission for Disasters and Accidents for funding for the construction of an underground channel to drain rainwater and thus not only protect, but also improve the space on “Chernozem” street.

Evgeni Georgiev, deputy mayor of Silistra, said that by decree of the Council of Ministers funds are allocated to 50% of the total amount of the project. The renovation started, but after a few months the work stopped.

The reason for not completing the project is the lack of money. The municipality says that after only half of the planned one and a half million leva for the project was transferred, the contractor stopped work until the rest of the money was released.

The local administration expresses concern that because of the unfinished repairs, water pipes and roadways may fail.
