The District Court in Veliko Tarnovo has imposed a permanent preventive measure of "detention in custody" on the Turkish citizen who a few days ago caused a crash with a fatality in the Republic Pass and fled the scene.

The court accepted the arguments of the prosecution that there is a real danger that the accused will flee the country, since he is a foreign citizen without a permanent address in Bulgaria.

"He did not understand that there had been an accident. "He assumed that there was a technical failure of the truck," the official defense attorney Irina Koseva tried to defend her client, but this did not convince the court.

The fatal accident occurred on May 5 near the Veliko Tarnovo village of Voneshta Voda, when the Turkish heavy truck collided with a Renault car with a Plovdiv registration. The 27-year-old driver from Plovdiv died in the incident, and his passenger escaped with minor injuries.

The driver of the Turkish truck did not stop at the scene of the accident and continued on his way, but was detained about two hours later in the Yambol region while trying to leave the country.

"The state prosecution will insist on taking a preventive measure of 'detention in custody' "given the fact that the accused is a Turkish citizen, a driver of a car, and has no permanent residence in the country," said District Prosecutor Vessela Karcheva before the court hearing.

On May 6, the accused was temporarily detained for 72 hours, and now, following the court's decision, he will remain there until his eventual trial. Detention is the most severe measure of restraint provided for by law.

For causing a traffic accident with a fatality, the Turkish citizen can receive an effective sentence of imprisonment.
