Hampartzumyan: Almost all dictatorships start with referendums

There should absolutely not be a referendum at this point. First, because it is illegal and second, because at this stage there is no way to go back

A number of political reactions over the past few weekends were caused by Rumen Radev's extraordinary address.

He himself stated yesterday that he hopes that the members of parliament will be committed not only to the eurozone, but also to democracy.

On the other hand, Tomislav Donchev, who was a guest on the bTV show “Why, Mr. Minister?“ yesterday, stated that the euro referendum is another “investment in dividing society“.

The PP-DB is preparing a declaration to show what the political support is for our country's accession to the eurozone.

The topic is commented on by Prof. Rumen Gechev, former Minister of Economy and former MP from the Bulgarian Socialist Party and financier Levon Hampartzumyan on the show “This Morning“ on bTV.

“There should be no referendum at this time. First, it is illegal and second, at this stage there is no way to go back“, Hampartzumyan was categorical.

Rumen Gechev, on the other hand, stated that holding a national referendum is imperative for legal and democratic reasons.

“There is no such rule, I have read the rules ten times, the European Central Bank Act and nowhere is it mandatory. I give an example of Sweden – it has long met all the criteria, are they going to whip Sweden into the eurozone? This contradicts common sense – that if you have fulfilled certain conditions, you are obliged to immediately, on January 1, enter the eurozone“, he explained.

According to Article 5 of the Treaty of Accession to the European Union, however, we must introduce the euro when we fulfill the Maastricht criteria.

“We are getting into technical arguments, and the dispute is neither legal nor technical. Almost all dictatorships begin with referendums and some abra-cadabra figures“, Hampartzumyan stated.
