The question of a referendum on the euro, posed in this way, for me is a direct contradiction with what has already been taken as a political decision by Bulgaria since the signing of the Treaty of Accession to the European Union. Questions cannot be asked that put us in conflict with decisions taken in the international sphere. This was said by political scientist Assoc. Prof. Tatyana Burudzhieva in the program "Morning in Focus" on Radio "Focus" with host Asya Alexandrova.
The referendum has its logic, meaning, importance and effect when citizens can make a political decision, she emphasized.
"Since the political decision has already been made, we cannot expect any effect from the referendum in relation to this political decision. There is more logic in the issue of "Vazrazhdane", which spoke of postponing the implementation of the decision until 2040, while with this question the president is actually attacking the decision itself and demanding a change in the decision of the Bulgarian state," commented Assoc. Prof. Burudzhieva.
According to her, Rumen Radev's move with the request for a referendum is a PR move that will be used in the future.
"In the event of a possible future creation of a political project, Bulgarians will be reminded of it, especially if there are serious negatives in the process of introducing the euro. But here, today and now everything looks a bit like that raised fist, when the next day nothing happened – neither held the protests, nor left the presidency to fight for change. This is a symbolically raised fist, from which nothing will come, quickly and decisively, in terms of the political project“, the political scientist believes.
According to her, the president's actions will not have an effect on the decision of the European partners. “There may be some problem with the assessment of political stability in Bulgaria, but I think it will not have exactly such an effect“, predicts Tatyana Burudzhieva.
She expressed hope that the parliament will make a quick decision on holding a referendum and close the topic as quickly as possible. – Any other option – Returning, dragging it out, putting it in committees, seeking a decision from the Constitutional Court is also possible as a procedure, but in the eyes of public opinion it will look like weakness, like evasion of responsibility, like an embarrassment to confirm your position," said Assoc. Prof. Burudzhieva.
