The tragedy took place between Iglata Peak and Dvuglav Peak

A climber has died in an accident in Rila, the Mountain Rescue Service reported, NOVA reported. On June 21, after 6:00 p.m., the Mountain Rescue Service received a report of an injured person in the area of Dvuglav Peak.

According to initial information, three tourists were climbing between Iglata Peak and Dvuglav Peak, when part of the rock broke off and a 33-year-old man fell from a height of about 10 m. The information is that he is seriously injured, but is in contact.

The head of the Borovets Mountain Rescue Service base was immediately notified and an organization was started to conduct a rescue operation. A decision was made to seek help by air, since the place is remote, and the terrain – extremely difficult. A medical helicopter was sent from “Bulgaria Heli Med Service”, which managed to transport a large part of the mountain rescuers and their necessary equipment to the area of Mount Orlovets before dark. From there, despite the onset of night, the team headed to the scene of the incident, which is located in very difficult rocky terrain, according to the Bulgarian Rescue Service.

At 5:00 a.m. the next morning, the mountain rescuers from the Samokov detachment were joined by their colleagues from the detachments in Bansko and Sofia, who were also taken by helicopter, along with specialized equipment for conducting a rock operation. Since the terrain did not allow a helicopter to land, a decision was made to activate the procedure through the Directorate of Mountain Rescue and Rescue Services - Ministry of Internal Affairs, and a helicopter “Kugyr” took off from the Krumovo airbase with the task of reaching, evacuating with the help of a winch and transporting the injured and rescuers, the statement said.

Meanwhile, all mountain rescue teams reached the three men. One was already dead, the other two were in shock. They were transported to the foot of Dvuglav Peak, from where they were taken by military helicopter to the Mecha Polyana area, Malyovitsa complex.

The Bulgarian Red Cross's PSS expresses its condolences to the relatives of the deceased.
