Medical law lawyer with advice to expectant mothers about their rights

It is good for women who are about to give birth to remain calm. They should not simply visit hospitals like hotels in search of luxurious conditions. They should make sure what kind of comprehensive care they can receive in the respective medical facility

After a woman in labor told about rude treatment and physical and verbal aggression in the “Maitchin Dom” while she was giving birth, in the program “Social Network” on NOVA News, medical law lawyer Dr. Maria Petrova gave advice to expectant mothers about their rights.

"It is good for women who are about to give birth to remain calm. They should not simply visit hospitals like hotels in search of luxurious conditions. They should make sure what kind of comprehensive care they can receive in the respective medical facility," she emphasized.

According to her, expectant mothers should find out whether the hospital where they will give birth has a sufficiently well-developed neonatology department and how many specialists the medical facility has on duty. "Because the staff shortage in Bulgaria has its negative effects. Such as delays in the relevant care, and sometimes a lack of sufficient quality," the lawyer emphasized.

She advised women in labor to choose a doctor who is in communication, and why not the same one who monitors their pregnancy. "In order to avoid the vicious practice of the so-called team selection and paying a lot of money, I believe that the doctor who monitors the pregnancy should enter into collaboration with the one who is supposed to deliver the woman. If such contact cannot be ensured, at least consider several options for teams that are familiar with the patient's medical condition and an adequate process of informed choices and consents should take place. Without instilling fears, without blaming each other in advance, without increasing tension between doctors and patients, because this does not lead to anything good, "the lawyer explained.
