Former Russian President and current Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev warned that a possible delivery of American Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine could have serious consequences for all countries - especially for US President Donald Trump, reports „Reuters“, reports News.bg.
„How should Russia react? Exactly!“, Medvedev wrote on his Telegram channel, hinting at a possible nuclear response from Moscow.
His comment comes a day after Trump's statement that he could approve the provision of long-range Tomahawk missiles to Kiev if Vladimir Putin does not stop the war in Ukraine.
“Yes, we might. Or we might not. Do they want Tomahawk missiles flying at them? I don't think so,“ Trump said on Sunday.
Medvedev, who often uses social media to make sharp comments about the US leader, reiterated the Kremlin's position that after launch it is impossible to distinguish a missile with a nuclear warhead from one with a conventional charge, which makes such actions extremely risky.
“We can only hope that this is another empty threat... as well as sending nuclear submarines closer to Russia,“ Medvedev added ironically, referring to a statement by Trump in August when the US president said he had ordered two nuclear submarines to move towards the Russian coast in response to “provocative statements“ by the Russian politician.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin also warned that a possible supply of Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine, which have a range of up to 2,500 km and can reach Moscow, would lead to a complete breakdown in relations between Washington and Moscow.
For his part, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that if Kiev receives such missiles, they will be used only against military targets, and not against civilian objects on Russian territory.
