The Russian financial watchdog „Rosfinmonitoring“ has added former prime minister Mikhail Kasyanov and leading economist Sergei Guriev to its list of „extremists and terrorists“, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.
The list has been significantly expanded since the start of the war in Ukraine and now includes 19,131 individuals and 823 legal entities.
„Rosfinmonitoring“ implements measures against money laundering and the financing of terrorist activities and has the authority to freeze the bank accounts of individuals included in the list.
Mikhail Kasyanov was prime minister during the first four years of Vladimir Putin's rule, he was removed in February 2004, shortly before Putin's second term. He then went into opposition and left Russia in 2022, having begun criticizing its invasion of Ukraine. Kasyanov was declared a "foreign agent" in November 2023.
Sergey Guriev is a former chief economist at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and current dean of the London Business School. Last month, he published an article calling on Western governments to tighten sanctions on Moscow, provide modern weapons to Ukraine and encourage a "brain drain" from Russia.
