39 people remain in hospital after head-on train collision in Spain, death toll rises to 42

Relatives of passengers travelling on Sunday night have reported a total of 45 missing; 25 of the victims have already been identified

Search teams in Andalusia have recovered four bodies from the wreckage of a train that was hit in the crash that occurred late on Sunday. The Spanish government has declared three days of mourning in memory of the victims, whose number has reached 42 people.

Two days after the fatal crash between two trains on the Seville-Madrid line, the work of firefighters continues. Cranes are clearing the scene of the incident so that teams can reach the crushed carriages. Officials do not rule out the possibility of finding more dead. Relatives of passengers travelling on Sunday night have reported a total of 45 missing; 25 of the victims have already been identified.

A total of 39 people remain in hospital: 35 adults and four children. Nine of those hospitalized, including one minor, are in intensive care units.

Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska said that all versions of the accident are being worked out. He specified that experts from the investigative commission have inspected the site of the derailment and the damage caused. An analysis of both the rails and the wheels of the high-speed train is pending.

Against this backdrop, Spanish King Felipe VI and his wife Letizia visited the scene of the tragedy, those hospitalized in hospitals in Cordoba and the center for accommodation and support for the families of the victims and injured. Relatives of the victims of the accident greeted them with applause. The Royal Family expressed their gratitude and appreciation for the collective efforts of the institutions, emergency services, rescue teams and citizens who helped in the first hours after the incident.
