Another major accident! Cuba is in the dark again

Although Cuba produces 40% of its oil and generates its own electricity, it is not enough to meet demand as its electrical grid continues to collapse

The authorities in Cuba have announced a power outage across the island, reports the AP, quoted by BTA.

The energy and economic crisis in the country of about 11 million people is deepening. Cuba has blamed the US energy blockade for its problems after President Donald Trump warned in January of tariffs on any country that sells or supplies oil to the country.

The Ministry of Energy and Mines on Monday X marked a "complete outage" of the country's electricity system and said it was investigating the incident.

President Miguel Diaz-Canel said on Friday that the island had not received oil supplies for more than three months and was running on solar energy, natural gas and thermoelectric plants, and the government had to postpone operations for tens of thousands of people.

A massive power outage more than a week ago affected the western part of the island, leaving millions without power.

Critical oil supplies from Venezuela were cut off after the United States invaded the South American country in early January and arrested its then-President Nicolas Maduro.

Although Cuba produces 40% of its oil and generates its own electricity, this is not enough to meet demand as its electrical grid continues to collapse.

On Friday, Diaz-Canel confirmed that Cuba is in talks with the U.S. government, as the problems continue to deepen.
