A huge fire rages in Cyprus VIDEO

The element remains uncontrollable

The large fire in Cyprus that broke out in the early afternoon on Tuesday in Paphos district remains uncontrollable, and the battle will continue throughout the night, BNR reported.

Extreme heat continues on the island, and for today the Meteorological Service announced a yellow code for a maximum temperature of 41 degrees.

The fire front exceeds 5 kilometers and ground firefighting forces will operate throughout the night in active and hard-to-reach areas to contain it, Fire Service spokesman Andreas Ketis said late last night.

At dawn, the five aerial vehicles involved in extinguishing on Tuesday will resume their work. Early this morning, two firefighting aircraft from Greece, provided under the European Civil Protection Mechanism, are expected to land at Paphos airport. Jordan will send 2 more helicopters.

Evacuated people from the fire-affected areas have been accommodated in hotels in Paphos.

President Nikos Christodoulidis returned early last night from Jordan, where he participated in the humanitarian aid conference for Gaza, and was at the Crisis Management Coordination Center with three ministers.

The Paphos District Administration is expected today to start recording the damage caused by the fire, which is significant.

The fire-risk heatwave will continue in Cyprus this week, with temperatures forecast to reach 45 degrees.
