Mezzola asked for a second term as President of the EP

The extraordinary meeting of the European leaders for the top positions in the EU ended without a result

The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Mezzola, said at the entrance to the meeting of the European leaders that she submitted her candidacy for second term at the head of the parliament, BNR reported.

When asked if it was possible for the president of the European Commission to be voted in at its founding meeting in July, she replied that it depends on the outcome of today's meeting and the official European Council at the end of this month, but added that the European Parliament is technically prepared for anything.

The extraordinary meeting of European leaders, which was expected to reach a consensus on the top positions in the EU for the next 5 years, ended without a result.

"We are moving in the right direction, but there is no agreement at this stage," said European Council President Charles Michel.

A regular European Council is to be held at the end of next week. Michel said that at today's meeting the leaders simply exchanged views on the proposed candidacies. He said the leaders had a collective obligation to reach the agreement by the end of the month. As an important prerequisite for the consensus, he highlighted the unity of all member countries.

Among the disaffected was Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who, according to diplomatic sources, had expected that evening to discuss the actions to be taken, given the results of the European elections, and from that starting point to start the discussions on the names for the top posts , not vice versa.

The conservatives Meloni belongs to are among the high achievers. French President Emmanuel Macron expressed confidence that a deal was close, but stressed that it may not be reached before French elections on June 30 and July 7. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said, the decision for the top positions has already been agreed between the EPP, the Socialists and the Liberals
