Eight bodies recovered after Zambia gravel mine collapse VIDEO

Police fear more workers under rubble

Eight bodies have been removed from a gravel mine that collapsed in Zambia, police said, fearing that more workers were buried under the debris, dariknews.bg reported.

On Sunday morning, part of a quarry about 45 km east of the capital Lusaka collapsed while a dump truck was loading gravel, “trapping an unknown number of male loaders”, police said.

The driver of the truck, who was partially buried before being extricated and hospitalized, estimates there were at least nine men around his truck at the time of the accident.

“Our rescue teams are working tirelessly to locate the victims,” said police spokesman Ray Hamunga.

“However, due to the complex conditions at the site, the rescue operation has been temporarily suspended for the day”, Hamunga added, and operations will resume on August 26 “at daylight”.

There are many mines in Zambia and fatal accidents are common.

In December 2023, nearly 30 miners lost their lives when a copper mine in the north of the country collapsed following a mudslide caused by heavy rains.
