Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan compared the situation in Gaza to the Srebrenica genocide in a video message marking the 30th anniversary of the 1995 massacre. of over 8,000 Bosnian Muslim boys and men, which is recognized as the only genocide in Europe after the Holocaust, the website “Türkiye Today“ reported, BTA reported.
In his speech on the occasion of the anniversary, Erdogan criticized the international community for its irresponsible attitude towards historical and current conflicts, emphasizing that “for Turkey, all statements that deny the genocide in Srebrenica and glorify war criminals are completely unacceptable“.
“Unfortunately, what is happening in Gaza today shows that the international community has not learned the necessary lessons from Srebrenica“, Erdogan added, emphasizing that “The Israeli administration will sooner or later take responsibility for the genocide it is committing against over 57,000 Palestinian children, women and men“.
The 1995 war crime in Srebrenica has been determined to be genocide by both national and international courts. It was committed by members of the Army of Republika Srpska under the command of Radovan Karadžić and Ratko Mladić, who were sentenced to life imprisonment by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, based in The Hague. At least 47 people were convicted of crimes in Srebrenica, receiving a total of more than 700 years in prison, the Bosnian news agency FENA reported.
Both Bosnian Serbs and neighboring Serbia still refuse to recognize that the Srebrenica massacre was genocide, despite rulings by two UN tribunals.
The Bosnian civil war (1992-1995) led to the deaths of more than 100,000 people and the displacement of millions.
