21 Kenyans killed in bus crash on way back from funeral

The driver lost control of the vehicle while approaching a roundabout at high speed and the bus overturned

At least 21 people died after a bus carrying people returning from a funeral in southwestern Kenya overturned and fell into a ditch, the Associated Press reported, quoted by BTA, citing a police statement.

The bus was travelling from the town of Kakamega to the city of Kisumu, where the accident occurred.

The driver lost control of the vehicle while approaching a roundabout at high speed and the bus overturned, said Peter Maina, regional traffic officer in Nyanza province, where Kisumu is located.

The dead included 10 women, 10 men and a 10-year-old girl, he added.

Road accidents are not uncommon in Kenya, as well as in the wider East African region, where roads are often narrow and in poor condition. Police often blame speeding drivers for road accidents.

Kenya has been hit by several traffic accidents in recent days. On Sunday, at least six people were killed and two others injured when a small plane used to transport patients crashed in a densely populated area of the capital Nairobi, the medical charity that used the plane and local officials said, Reuters reported. Hours later, a train and a bus collided in the central Kenyan city of Naivasha, killing nine people, local media reported. The victims were workers on their way to work when the bus crashed at a railway crossing, police said.
