The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) armed group, which is fighting the Sudanese army, attacked a camp for displaced people in North Darfur, killing over 40 people and wounding at least 19, Agence France-Presse reported, citing local rescue workers.
RSF fighters attacked the "Abu Shouk" camp and opened fire on civilians in their homes and on the streets, the camp's emergency unit said.
The attack came as the group's fighters were advancing towards El Fasher – the last town in the Darfur region of western Sudan still under army control.
This is the second SDF attack on El Fasher and neighboring camps for displaced people in recent months since the rebels withdrew from the capital Khartoum in March.
In April, a major SDF offensive near the "Zamzam" camp forced tens of thousands of displaced people to flee again, AFP recalls. Many have taken refuge in El Fasher.
The rebels now control almost the entire Darfur region, and with their allies, some areas in South Sudan, while the army holds the north, east and central parts of the country.
The conflict, which began in April 2023, has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced or forced millions abroad, in what the UN has described as the "world's worst humanitarian crisis".
Last year, famine was declared in three camps in the El Fasher region, including "Abu Shouk".
