Demand for electric vehicles with an internal combustion engine (ICE) range extender is growing dramatically - 1

While the automotive world continues to wander between pure electrification and traditional fuel, a new, “smart” player is emerging on the horizon. EREV (Electric Vehicles with Range Extender) technology is no longer just an exotic experiment for tech geeks, but is becoming a lifeline for large corporations. In an era of skyrocketing battery prices and the eternal fear of “getting stuck somewhere on the road”, electric vehicles with a built-in generator offer the best of both worlds – silent gliding on the asphalt and the peace of mind of a gasoline tank.

The magic here is in its simplicity: the wheels are powered solely by electricity, and the small internal combustion engine under the hood has no mechanical connection to them. Its sole mission is to act as a small power plant that charges the battery on the go. Wow! This allows engineers to use lighter and cheaper batteries without sacrificing comfort and environmental footprint.

The giants in the industry are already feeling which way the wind is blowing. Volkswagen is preparing a large-scale offensive with a five-year plan for a specialized EREV platform, with the official launch expected in the spring of 2026. At the same time, Stellantis has already rolled up its sleeves, preparing extended-range versions of the American icons Jeep Grand Wagoneer and Ram 1500. Even BMW is not sleeping, directing resources to this type of drive, initially for the hungry Chinese market, but with one eye on European highways. Renault also sees this as the ideal bridge to full electrification, reducing its dependence on expensive battery raw materials.

However, the real driver of this trend is China. There, sales of EREV models have literally exploded, overtaking traditional plug-in hybrids. Consumers are voting en masse with their wallets for the “electric feel” with additional insurance in the form of a generator. This is a clear signal that people are looking for pragmatic solutions here and now, not just promises of future infrastructure.

Ultimately, extended-range technology is emerging as the golden mean. It lowers the price of the car, removes the panic of the empty battery indicator, and preserves the pleasure of instant torque. If battery prices do not plummet, EREV models have every chance of becoming the dominant scenario for the second half of the decade.
