Fuel consumption of just 2 liters per 100 kilometers? It almost sounds like science fiction, but it's not! - 1

Toyota, which for decades seemed impregnable in the world of hybrids, is under massive siege. In 2026, the rules of the game change dramatically, as Chinese car titans have decided it's time to dethrone the king. Changan, Geely and Chery are no longer content with the role of runners-up and are throwing down the gauntlet with the ambition to rewrite the laws of economy.

A consumption of just 2 liters per 100 kilometers? It sounds almost like science fiction, but sources from CarNewsChina confirm that this is the new reality that Beijing is preparing for the global market. While Japanese engineers rely on the familiar smoothness of their planetary gear, their Chinese colleagues have chosen a radically different and much more aggressive technological path. They integrate complex, multi-stage hybrid transmissions (DHT) and series-parallel circuits that elevate efficiency on a pedestal.

In this technological duel, the Chinese are making a bold bet: prioritizing electric propulsion. Changan's Blue Core HEV system, for example, is a real beast, relying on electric motors with a power of up to 180 kW. The result is a car that accelerates with the ease of a pure electric vehicle, while the internal combustion engine quietly works in the background as a high-tech generator. This strategy allows for record-low consumption in urban environments, leaving the competition to breathe their dust at the gas station.

But why is there this turn to classic HEV models that do not charge from the socket right now? The answer is simple and lies in the relentless battle for profitability. In a world of volatile lithium prices, installing huge batteries is an expensive pleasure. A conventional hybrid needs a modest 1-2 kWh battery, which lowers production costs to levels that plug-in models cannot afford. This is the ideal “golden balance“ – affordable price for the customer and decent margin for the manufacturer.

In addition, Chinese brands have their eyes on global markets, where the charging infrastructure is still, to put it mildly, in its infancy. Watching how Toyota sells over 4 million hybrids per year, the giants from the East realized that the world is not yet ready to finally part with the gasoline gun. The change in subsidies in China itself also adds fuel to the fire, leveling the chances of all types of hybrid drive.

Geely is already warming up with promises of the i-HEV system, forged for solid consumption under 3 liters. Chery is “blurring“ the boundaries, experimenting with larger batteries in classic hybrids, while Changan has literally flooded the roads with test mules. We are no longer talking about copying the Japanese experience – today we are witnessing a new Chinese offensive that offers more power, lower costs and uncompromising technology. The battle for every milliliter of fuel is just beginning.
