The cold weather that hit the Czech Republic in recent days after 30 degree heat caused damage to wine producers in the amount of more than two billion crowns (about 86 million USD), the news agency ČTK reported, citing the Union of Winemakers of the Republic.
According to his information, in the western part of the country, 95% of the vineyards suffered from frost, in the eastern part the damage is less significant.
The Union of Gardeners of the Czech Republic reported that the frost has destroyed almost the entire future fruit harvest in the western part of the republic. The head of the association, Martin Ludvik, said that the April frosts, uncharacteristic of the country's climate, have become one of the biggest disasters for the industry in the last 100 years.
Record colds for the end of April were registered in the Czech Republic. In some parts of the country, overnight temperatures reached minus 15 degrees Celsius. Snow fell in the mountainous regions, the thickness of which exceeded 30 centimeters in some places. At the same time, in the middle of the month, meteorologists reported tropical heat, when the air warmed up to 31.5 degrees.
