Vietnam Communist Party General Secretary Tho Lam will visit the U.S. in the coming weeks as part of tariff talks, Bloomberg reported, citing sources.
Tho Lam intends to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump and facilitate a trade deal between the two countries by July 9. That is when the increased tariffs announced earlier by the American leader are set to take effect. Tho Lam is expected to lead a delegation of Vietnamese officials and business leaders. Hanoi, as the agency notes, expects to conclude additional deals on importing goods from the United States to reduce the positive balance of bilateral trade, as required by Washington.
According to Bloomberg, the countries are close to concluding a framework agreement, under which Vietnam expects to receive from the United States a tariff rate in the range of 20 to 25%. However, Washington demands that Hanoi step up the fight against illegal overloaded traffic of goods and lift non-tariff measures against American companies.
