“The current government is happy to listen to any criticism, because political pragmatism is important to us. And political pragmatism means only one thing – political stability“, said Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov at the solemn ceremony for the opening of the new academic year at the University of National and World Economy.
In his speech, the Prime Minister emphasized that trust is the main element for the normal functioning of institutions. “The attack against him – through fake news and manipulations – undermines the democratic environment“, Zhelyazkov was categorical.
Among the highlights of his speech were the need to brighten the economy and limit the gray sector, which are key to sustainable growth and the real alignment of living standards with the average European standard. “Conversations about the future of the tax and social security system must be conducted in a calm and predictable environment, and not under the pressure of momentary crises“, the Prime Minister also emphasized.
The Prime Minister also emphasized the importance of Bulgaria's integration into European economic structures. “Issues that must find pragmatic unification – such as the introduction of the euro – often turn into a major political debate. This conversation is not “for“ or “against“ the euro, but about Bulgaria's integration into the system of European countries, embodied by the European Union. Twenty years is a sufficient period for real convergence to reach a level where the adoption of the single currency is a stimulus, not an obstacle, for the economy," the Prime Minister also pointed out.
“With a pragmatic approach and consensus, we can ensure growth and prosperity for the country“, the Prime Minister concluded and wished a successful academic year to the students and lecturers of the UNWE.
On the occasion of the 105th anniversary of the university, medals were solemnly awarded to individuals with contributions to the development of higher education and the academic community. The Rector of the UNWE, Prof. Dimitar Dimitrov, presented a medal to Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov. The awards are awarded every five years as a sign of recognition and respect for prominent public figures.
During his visit to the UNWE, the Prime Minister held a meeting with the Rector, Prof. Dimitar Dimitrov. The two discussed current topics related to the development of higher education, the training of personnel for the economy, and cooperation between the academic community, state institutions, and business.
