Over 28 thousand speeders were detected by the average speed control systems in just the first 20 days of their introduction. The highest average speed at which a car was driven was 223 km/h on the "Trakia" highway in the area of Tsalapitsa, the National Road Administration announced.
The same car was also registered with the record instantaneous speed of over 266 km/h. "This car travels 100-130 meters per second, even more. Imagine if someone had to react," commented Prof. Oleg Asenov, Director of the National Traffic Administration.
The driver of the "slowing" car will be fined 900 leva and disqualified from driving for two months, the "Traffic Police" specified.
Since the introduction of the average speed control system three weeks ago, the data show a significant improvement in driver behavior. "The average line was about 2,000 violations per day. And now we see that the average line has already decreased almost 4 times to about 500 violations, which is generally a good sign that Bulgarian drivers are taking notice," explained Prof. Asenov.
The most indicative are the data from the weekends in September, when traffic reaches its peak values.
"A five-fold decrease in the number of violations detected on the first and last Saturday, and a seven-fold decrease in the number of Sundays," noted Maria Boteva, deputy head of the "Traffic Police" department at the General Directorate of Traffic Safety.
Although it is not the busiest in terms of the number of vehicles, the Northern Expressway near Sofia remains a record holder in terms of violators. The section is just over 10 kilometers long between Chepintsi and Iliyantsi.
"The Tangent does not cease to be the track of Bulgaria. I already call it that. Because it is the first section introduced. Many people know that there is control there, but despite this, the number of violators does not decrease," commented the director of the National Toll Administration.
The "Traffic Police" are already processing the registered violations, identifying the owners of the vehicles. The first electronic tickets will be sent in the coming weeks, and for more serious violations, acts for temporary withdrawal of driving licenses will be issued.
In the coming weeks, the sections in which the average speed will be controlled will also increase.
