The authorities are taking emergency measures to secure the road to the legendary Okolchitsa peak. The reason - a huge piece of rock fell on the route. There is very serious damage along the route, but fortunately no people were injured, bTV summarized.
The securing has already begun. We are usually used to seeing collapses in the Iskar Gorge, but not here on the road to the emblematic Okolchitsa peak, where thousands of people gather on June 2.
A huge rock fell from a great height in this exact section a few days ago.
„It happened on Monday around 10:15 - 10:20. There was a rumble in the village, as it is below the village and everything is going down - the sound that came from the falling rocks. We heard the rock falling. A boy was sent to look, to see what it was about. He saw that a huge piece had fallen and hit the road. After the road, it split. Part of the large rock went to the lower road“, commented the mayor of the village of Chelopek Tihomir Toshev.
The road winds like a serpentine.
“We immediately signaled the “Road Infrastructure“ agency, the Regional Road Administration in Vratsa. Within half an hour, a technician was sent. The small rocks were cleaned. They made the road safe so that it could still be crossed. There was also a person waiting who wanted to cross, right after the rocks collapsed“, explained the mayor.
According to him, the person was returning from Okolchitsa Peak.
The road itself was built in the Vratsa Balkan around the 1960s with explosions.
“Collapses usually occur. The fallen rock weighed over 50 tons. It fell about 50 meters, directly onto the road. It made a 50-60 centimeter deep crater on the road itself“, explained the mayor of Chelopek.
The section is expected to be asphalted.
