The first Chairman of the Court of Accounts in the modern history of Bulgaria has passed away

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nikolov was a deputy in the Seventh Grand National Assembly, in the 36th and 37th National Assembly

The first Chairman of the Court of Accounts of the Republic of Bulgaria, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Georgi Nikolov, passed away at the age of 80 on November 21, 2025 after a short illness, the national audit institution announced.

He was elected by the National Assembly (NA) as head of the Court of Accounts of Bulgaria, which was restored in 1995, and remained at the head of the institution for 10 years.

"His rich professional experience, personal qualities and exceptional dedication are the basis for the successful construction of the Supreme Audit Institution of the country in the years of transition," the Court of Accounts stated.

Assoc. Dr. Nikolov is a deputy in the Seventh Grand National Assembly, in the 36th and 37th National Assemblies. In the 36th National Assembly he was Deputy Chairman of the Economic Policy Committee, and in the 37th National Assembly he headed the Budget and Finance Committee until his election as Chairman of the Audit Institution. He was also Rector and Deputy Rector of the University of Insurance and Finance.

The National Audit Office expresses its condolences to the relatives of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Georgi Nikolov.
