Volunteers gathered this morning to help clean up the "Lyulin" district of the capital in an attempt to help control the garbage crisis in Sofia.
The garbage crisis has been going on for more than two months now. Today, volunteers from all over Sofia gathered in the "Lyulin" district to help collect the waste. People are equipped with shovels, gloves and bags to collect the garbage, BNT reported. There are also several trucks for bulky and construction waste on the ground.
The volunteers are working in groups to cover a larger area and clean more locations. The organizers explained that "Lyulin" 6 will be one of the priority neighborhoods and they will concentrate most of their efforts there.
Alexandra Angelova, organizer, says: "The idea started when we knew that there would be no garbage collection next week, we started by putting up notices at the entrances to see if anyone wanted one."
Sabi Angelov, also an organizer, adds: "We are in constant cooperation with the inspectorate, we discuss what they see, what we see, and we come together and act."
"I live here, I have no choice, it has to be cleaned. In general, we plan, they tell us where to go, we go and clean", said a volunteer.
The mayor of the capital, Vasil Terziev, as well as the deputy mayor for ecology, Nadezhda Bobcheva, also joined the cleaning.
"The garbage will not be the thing that will make me leave "Moskovska" 33. This is a crisis that we will deal with, and I told you - it is a matter of choice here, whether you choose to be a victim and complain about how difficult the circumstances are… It is now clear what needs to be done if there starts to be uncollected garbage somewhere, so it will be easier for us to deal with such problem areas. I am optimistic, things are fixed", Terziev commented to the media.
